13. Holt Town

The next day, I lined up for the morning ration for the first time. The morning ration was very lively, unlike the daytime ration where many people were unmotivated. I can hear various chattering voices, and sometimes even laughter. I was surprised to see such a difference between morning and noon.

It seems that most of the people who receive the morning ration are contracted day laborers as adventurers in the town. There should be a lot of people with good physique and well-groomed by reason. If I’m going to work in town, I have to be clean too.

And that’s not all. There are a lot of soup ingredients for distribution! I asked my sister yesterday.

“Um, why are there so many soup ingredients?”

“This is because we are buying ingredients with the money we all worked for”

I heard good things. You know, the rations are just enough to keep you from starving, so you need more food to work. When I receive my morning ration, I either have to deposit money or buy my own food.

“That’s right, it’s a good idea to put potatoes in your pocket for lunch. You’ll be hungry later, right?”

“Yes, I will. Thank you very much for everything. Next time, I will give you a hole mouse or a fish.”

“Fufu, then I’d be more than happy to have it included in the distribution.”

“yes”

What a good person, I was moved and my heart warmed. I want to be a person who can reach out to someone in trouble, like this sister.

We eat our rations and clean up afterwards. Maybe it’s because everyone has a job, but the movement is brisk and fast. It’s amazing how people can change so much when they have goals.

Once everything is cleaned up, everyone moves to town. I followed my sister and left the village.

It took an hour to walk from the village to the town. The town is surrounded by a wall of about 5m, and you use the gate to come and go. Refugees were flocking to the gate, and the gatekeepers were confirming something as they entered the town.

My sister and I are watching the spectacle from a distance.

“What is he doing?”

“We check the certificate before entering. There are resident cards, guild certificates, and commercial certificates. This town collects 2000 ruta”

Why do you have to pay a tax to enter the town? That means that I need 2000 Ruta to enter with nothing.

“Refugees can enter because they have a guild certificate”

“It’s important to go to the guild and register as an adventurer as soon as you enter the town.”

“Yes.

“and?”

“Earn the registration fee of 10,000 Ruta, which is necessary for registering as an adventurer.”

10,000 Ruta to register as an adventurer! ?

“It’s an amount that ordinary people can easily afford, but it’s a barrier for refugees, isn’t it?”

“Ah, umm… All the refugees, huh?”

“Yeah, everyone was earning admission and registration fees outside of town.”

I-I don’t know… how can I make money outside of town? Because I want to go into town to earn money, but before that I need to pay money, and I also need to pay money to work… what should I do?

I was continuously surprised by the words my sister said. The obstacles before working are big and light and despair. Perhaps the people who receive the lackluster daytime rations are the people who despair of this. However, half of the refugees have crossed this wall and are working as adventurers.

Hmm, wait a minute. Half of the refugees are registered as adventurers and are working. There must be children inside. If so, it doesn’t mean that even I can do it if I do my best.

I can see that the despairing look on his face from earlier is loosening. Seeing my face like that, my sister smiled softly.

“Fufu, you also understood Riru-chan.”

“Yes. Half of them are working inside this wall, aren’t they? If so, even I can overcome this wall if I do my best.”

“That’s right, it’s a wall that can be overcome if you try hard. I’m relieved, don’t give up here.”

I was so surprised that I stopped thinking, but I’m really glad it wasn’t. That’s right, you can’t give up easily even though you’ve just started.

“There’s a merchant outside the town for refugees who can’t enter the town. Look at the place away from the gate.”

“Oh, someone is sitting under the roof.”

“He’s doing business for refugees, but he’ll buy it cheaper than the regular price.”

Indeed, if there are merchants outside the town, they can get money by selling things without entering the town. It’s a pity that it’s cheap to buy, but I’m just grateful that they’re taking care of the refugees, so it can’t be helped.

“He’ll explain the business.”

“Yes, thank you”

“I want to go with you, but I have to go to work today, so I’m sorry”

“It’s okay. I really appreciate you taking the time for me.”

“No, it’s fine. Well then, do your best.”

Saying that, she walked to the town gate. She was a kind and nice person until the very end. I saw her off until she was out of sight.

Alright, I’ll have to do it by myself from here on. You’ve come this far, so let’s listen carefully and get a way to make money!
