22. Library on the 3rd floor

“Thank you for your hard work. The reward for cleaning the hole is 6000 Ruta.”

After returning to the guild, I reported to the receptionist that the work was completed. When I receive the same amount as yesterday, I put it in the coin bag. I can’t stop grinning at the coin bag that is getting heavier little by little.

“Come to think of it, you just registered as an adventurer yesterday.”

“Yes. What’s wrong?”

“Did you know that the guild also keeps money for you?”

“Eh, is that so?”

I didn’t talk about that yesterday, I wonder if it was something I didn’t explain to a first-time adventurer. However, there is a kind system to keep money.

“Since Riru-sama is not an adult yet, aren’t you worried about carrying around your own money?”

“Yes, I always hide it in a place where no one can find it.”

“In that case, why not leave it at the guild? All money is managed using the adventurer’s card, so you can freely withdraw and withdraw money with just the adventurer’s card, and you can use it whenever the guild is open. It is now possible.”

I see, the adventurer’s ID serves as a cash card. Be sure to hold on to this adventurer’s ID so you don’t lose it.

“Then, can I leave the money with you?”

“Yes, of course. How much will you deposit?”

“Um, 8,000 Ruta, please.”

I took out eight silver coins from the coin bag, and my sister took them and counted them.

“I have indeed received 8,000 Ruta. Please wait a moment as I will write the information on your card.”

The older sister turned around and started working on something. I can’t see her from here, so I don’t know what she’s doing. She must have put the information on her adventurer’s card.

After waiting for a while, my sister turned around.

“I have successfully updated my adventurer’s card. When I hold this adventurer’s card over the appraisal crystal…the number deposited in the crystal will appear like this.”

When I looked inside the crystal, I saw what appeared to be numbers lined up. But I don’t know what’s going on. This requires memorizing letters and numbers quickly.

“Thank you for everything.”

“No, if you need anything, please feel free to contact me.”

After bowing to my sister, I quickly leave the place. Well, the stairs leading to the third floor… there they are.

I was able to find some stairs towards the back of the building. I climbed the stairs and arrived at the third floor. Looking around, I was able to find a door with a nameplate on it. Maybe here?

I approach the door and slowly open it. Oh, there’s a bookshelf inside!

“Excuse me”

When I closed the door as quietly as possible, there was a counter near the door, and an old man was sitting there.

“Hmm, what can I do for you?”

“Um, I came here to learn letters, but could you lend me some materials?”

“Wow, it’s a letter. I’m impressed even though it’s still small. Please sit down in that seat for a while and wait.”

The old man looked a little surprised and quickly stood up from his chair. She points to a table in the center of the room and she’s gone somewhere.

For now, I sit at the table pointed at and wait in silence. There were books and stacks of paper of various shapes on the bookshelves around me, and I was intrigued to see what was written on them. But since I can’t read, I probably wouldn’t understand it even if I looked at it now.

As I was fidgeting and feeling restless, an old man came over with a large, thin wooden board.

“All those who don’t understand the letters have studied with this. Look at this and learn the letters.”

A wooden board was placed in front of me while I was sitting. There was some writing on the wooden board in ink, but I couldn’t read it at all.

“Oh, that’s right. You came here because you can’t read, so I’ll read it for you and teach you.”

“Thank you. I’ll do my best to learn quickly.”

Good thing I can tell you. That’s right, I think it would be nice if I could study outside the library in order to learn quickly.

“Um, are you willing to lend out this wooden board?”

“That’s too bad, as a general rule, you’re not allowed to take things out here.”

“I see… in that case, can I get some paper and a pen? I would like to write it down here and take it home with me to study.”

“Then it’s fine. However, I’ll take the money. Paper costs 300 rutas, and renting a pen costs 100 rutas.”

Good, seems to be fine. I take out the coin bag and present 400 Ruta to the old man. Grandpa took it and she moved behind the counter. When she returns, she has a piece of paper and a pen in her hand.

“Look, paper and pen. This is how you hold a pen.”

When he is given a piece of paper and a pen, he holds it just like his grandfather held it.

“Do this?”

“Okay, then. Then I’ll teach you one letter at a time.”

“Yes, please”

And then I started studying.

When the old man says a word, I hum the word. Then, use a pen to write out each character. The old man groaned as he was impressed by the way he was writing smoothly.

“Hmm, I wonder if you are good with your hands.

“Hahaha, the way Grandpa taught was easy to understand.”

Ah, that was dangerous. I can’t say that I used a pen in my previous life. Hmm, I guess it doesn’t seem weird. You won’t be called a genius or a child prodigy for something like this. I’m normal, I’m normal.

Although I was a little nervous, my studies progressed smoothly. Apparently, the characters in this country have a style similar to hiragana. Each letter represents one letter, and many letters are combined to form a word.

Besides letters, there are also numbers and symbols. There are 10 numbers, so it seems easy to remember.

Symbols are the characters that appear on the adventurer rank and status screen. There are more than 20 of them, but since it’s an old man’s story, you don’t have to remember them all. If you want to use it in daily life, you just need to memorize the meaning and order of the symbols that appear on the adventurer rank and status screen.

I was able to write everything down in no time when I was taught to concentrate. All you have to do is hammer it into your head before you forget it.

“Grandpa, thank you for teaching me.”

“It’s okay. Teaching like this is a good way to pass the time. Besides, there are quite a few people who don’t understand the letters, so you don’t have to worry about it. This is like my job.”

“That’s right. The guild has helped me in a lot of ways.”

“Well, do your best. There’s a lot of materials here, so if you have any trouble, come check it out.”

“Yes, I’ll definitely come.”

The guild is really doing a lot of work. Thanks to you, I was saved a lot. Once he learns the letters, it’s time to come and find out about magic. I want to use magic too.

I have to return to the village before dusk. Before that, let’s go eat some food. I think I’ll go out to eat at a different place today than yesterday.
