27. New workplace

“Riru-sama is currently an F-rank adventurer. There are many quests that require reading, writing, and calculations for E and above ranks, so this is the only quest I can introduce to you right now.”

“Can I read the paper?”

“Of course. After reading it, you can accept or decline it.”

I read the paper that was handed to me. I work as a salesperson at a bakery, working three days and taking one day off. The job details include selling bread and looking for people who are good at calculations. Working hours are from morning until evening, and lunch is included! Apparently you can take home the leftover bread for free.

The daily allowance is 7,000 Ruta, which is 1,000 Ruta more than the garbage collection. Although the detention time is longer, lunch is included and you may be able to take home bread, so the added value is attractive. I’m concerned that the period is less than half a year.

This is the only one you can take with F rank, so it’s best to take it now.

“I would like to accept this quest.”

“Thank you. I’ll write you a letter of introduction, so please wait a moment.”

The lady at the reception desk gave me a big smile and immediately started writing something on a piece of paper. As she waits for her to finish writing, she is approached.

“Also, as for Riru-sama’s clothes, I don’t think they are suitable for sale. Therefore, could you please buy new clothes for this quest?”

“Ah, that’s right. I was planning on getting new clothes eventually, so I’ll buy some before work.”

“Then I’ll write about that in the letter of introduction.”

I see, you need new clothes to work. The other refugees had neat clothes, so I guess I’ve come that far too. Hehe, I’m looking forward to going shopping for clothes.

“I have finished writing the letter of introduction. Please take this with you and visit the bakery mentioned in this memo.”

“thank you very much”

After receiving the introduction letter and memo, I bowed and left the place. Well, the memo says… it’s a bakery that can be reached in about 10 minutes from here.

I’m both excited and nervous about my new job.

I followed the notes and arrived in front of the bakery. The smell of fragrant bread wafted through the open door, and even though I wasn’t hungry, my stomach seemed to growl. When I looked up, I saw a sign for a bakery, and I knew this was the place I was going for.

I was nervous and nervous about going inside. At this point, she took a deep breath to calm herself down and headed inside the bakery.

“I’m sorry.”

“…Oh, wait a minute.”

“yes”

As soon as I entered, I heard a voice coming from inside. So I took a look inside the store and saw several types of bread lined up on the shelves. The fragrant smell mixed with the smell of nuts and honey is irresistible.

The inside of the store seems to be over 15 tatami mats, giving it a fairly spacious impression. There was a small counter in the corner of the room, and another room behind the counter. They must be making or baking bread there, and the smell of flour was coming from there.

As I stood there in a daze, a large man appeared from the back. He wears a white apron and has short dark brown hair.

“Do you need something?”

“I’m from the Adventurer’s Guild. This is a letter of introduction.”

“Show me which one.”

I was a little nervous when he said that in such an unfriendly way. When I gingerly handed over the letter of introduction, the man read the paper with a stern look on his face. Then, his eyebrows twitched and his gaze fell on me.

“Are you good at calculations?”

“yes”

“…How much is 8 pieces of bread costing 100 Ruta and 3 pieces of bread costing 160 Ruta?”

“Um, 1280 ruta.”

“…That’s correct. I see.”

I was surprised when the question was suddenly asked, but I’m glad I got the correct answer. If I answered correctly, the man’s expression seemed to soften a little. Maybe they were wary of me because I was wearing rags. Clothes are important.

“My name is Retom, and I’m the owner of this bakery.”

“My name is Riru. I’m not a resident of this town, I’m a refugee.”

“It seems so. But even if you’re a refugee, you just need to be careful about how you dress. I’m sure they’ll buy you clothes from now on.”

“Yes, I’ll buy a new one.”

I guess the clothes weren’t right. No wonder people dislike clothes with holes and no patches. Besides, you can’t wear clothes like this at a food store, so let’s buy nicer clothes.

“If it’s clothes, second-hand clothes are fine as long as they’re sturdy. There should be a second-hand clothing store one street over from this one, so you should buy there.”

“thank you”

Used clothes are fine, or rather, they sell used clothes! Good thing I don’t have to spend that much money. I currently have about 30,000 Ruta in cash, so this seems to be enough. I have 280,000 Ruta in savings, so I’m fine.

……Yeah? Why are we talking about clothes?

“Umm, maybe you’ll be hired even if you don’t?”

“Ah, that’s right. I wanted someone who would work early, so that’s what I meant.”

Is that so? I almost got carried away with the story. Phew, I’m glad to see you can work safely.

“I heard that the period is within six months, but specifically, how long will it last?”

“My wife’s condition was not good after giving birth, and she was unable to work. The doctor said that it would be best to rest for about six months. So, my wife could work. Until it becomes like that.”

“Understood”

I see, your wife can no longer work. Postpartum is the most important time, so I’m sure her husband, Retom-san, didn’t want to push her too hard. He’s unfriendly, but he’s a good person who cares about his wife.

“When should I start working?”

“The store is closed tomorrow, so can I order from the day after tomorrow?”

“Okay. I’m going to wake up with the sunrise, make and eat some rations, and then come to town for about an hour. Will I be able to make it in time for the store to open?”

“That’s fine. Even if I don’t arrive by the time the store opens, I can manage by myself first thing in the morning. For now, it’s fine as long as I know what time you can come the day after tomorrow.”

The problem is that I don’t live in a town, and I can’t believe that being a refugee here has negative effects. I want a sturdy watch, but I can’t buy one right now. I’ll think about it once I’m able to get more internal work.

“Specific job duties include displaying bread, dealing with customers, dealing with bulk purchases, accounting, and cleaning the store and outside. You may also be asked to help inside.”

“Understood”

“I’ll show you how to do it in detail on the day, so I want you to remember it.”

“Yes, I look forward to seeing you the day after tomorrow.”

The exchange ended with this. It was a short exchange, but the rest of the details will be revealed on the day. The period is not that long, but if you work hard you should be able to get a lot of money, so you have to work hard.

First, let’s go buy the clothes we need!
