The morning bread sale really turned into a war.
“Give me four pieces of bread.”
“Two loaves for me.”
“I-I…”
Children coming one after another. At first he was surprised to see me, but he immediately ordered. Since several children say the number of breads at the same time, it is difficult to remember who needs how many pieces.
“Um, four… two… how about you?”
“Um, uh…three.”
“Yes, three.”
“Excuse me, bread… there’s someone here for the first time.”
“Good morning, give me three pieces of bread.”
While I was responding, the next group of children arrived. I quickly put the bread on plates and baskets, pay the bill without making any mistakes, and then move on.
“I’m Riru, and I’m going to work starting today. Nice to meet you. How much bread do you want?”
“Nice to meet you. Four pieces of bread.”
“I have three.”
“Yes, 400 Ruta for 4. 300 Ruta for 3.”
I hurriedly put the bread on top, took the money with one hand, and counted it. Put the money in the wooden box, take the money again and count it.
“thank you very much”
“Riru, new bread is baked. Don’t leave it in the basket.”
“Yes, I understand”
“Good morning, give me three pieces of bread.”
Various voices come to me without a break. I leave the bread to Mr. Retom and I deal with the customers.
“It’s 300 Ruta for three.”
“That’s the first person I’ve seen.”
“Yes, I’m Riru, and I’ll be working from today. Thank you.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“Occhan”
“Give me three pieces of bread.”
“Ah, I’m first!”
Anyway, it keeps coming. They call out to me regardless of order, so it’s difficult to keep track of them. In order to properly handle the situation, we have no choice but to actively call out to them so that we don’t lose.
“How much bread do you have?”
“I’m a four. It’s my first time seeing someone.”
“I’m Riru, and I’m going to start working from today. Thank you.”
“Hurry up, three pieces of bread!”
“Excuse me. Um, three pieces of bread. It’s 300 ruta. For someone with four, it’s 400 ruta.”
“Hey. See you then.”
“Well, that’s exactly right, thank you very much.”
The boy handed him a small silver coin and quickly left. He hurriedly checked the number of coins and found that there was no mistake. When he looked up from the money, the boy wasn’t there, there were all kinds of people there.
After that, more and more children came and left the store in a hurry. Bread is being put out in stores just before it runs out, but I was nervous about when it would run out.
When the last bread was baked, five people came at once. It was so loud that I couldn’t hear the order and had to ask it back, but it was over in an instant. From there, I could see customers at little intervals.
Then, when there were only four loaves left, the number of customers suddenly stopped. The noise from earlier seemed to be a lie. Then Retom-san appeared quietly from the back.
“So, have you settled down? How much bread do you have left?”
“Four.”
“In that case, please move the four to a shelf near the wall and line them up.”
As I was told, I lined up the bread from the edge of the shelf and set it aside. Mr. Retom puts the basket in the back room and cleans up. Phew, it looks like I can finally catch my breath.
“What do you think? It must have been difficult.”
“That’s right. The children are doing well, so I raised my voice so they wouldn’t lose.”
“Yeah, from what I’ve heard, it seems okay. I’ll put a pitcher of water behind the counter, so you can drink it whenever you like.”
“Thank you. My throat was dry.”
When I was handed a water pitcher and a glass, I immediately poured water into the glass and drank it. Ah, come back to life.
“I’ll put a chair behind the counter, so if you don’t have anything to do, you can sit here and rest.”
“Yes, I understand. Do you have anything to do now?”
“Please wipe the center table clean. I’ll also clean the floor and the entrance.”
Mr. Retom retreated to the back and brought out a bucket, a rag, a broom, and a dustpan. Okay, let’s try a little harder and then take a break.
“I’m going to prepare the bread for lunch. I’ll explain about the bread for lunch once it’s baked, so please wait.”
“Understood”
So Retom-san retreated to the back of the store. Now, I’m left to work inside the store.
First, use a dry rag to collect the crumbs scattered on the center platform. Once collected, attach a dustpan to the edge of the table and drop the breadcrumbs into it.
Next, dampen a rag with a bucket of water and wring it out. Then, wipe the center table thoroughly from edge to edge. I also wiped down the counter.
Then it’s time to clean the shop with a broom. Sweep slowly from the edges to avoid raising too much dust. Since there were no customers, I was able to finish cleaning the store smoothly. Finally, if you collect the garbage with a dustpan, the cleaning of the store is complete.
Lastly, clean the entrance. Sweep slowly and carefully so as not to raise any dust. There wasn’t that much trash so I finished it quickly.
Suddenly, I looked around and saw a lot of people walking on the street. There were horse-drawn carriages moving inside, and I was a little excited to see the unique liveliness of the town.
I’ve finished the work I was told to do, so I think I’ll take a little break. Thinking this, I went back inside the store, and just then Retom-san came out from the back holding a griddle.
“I just finished baking some bread for lunch. Please put this on the shelf.”
“Yes. Wow, it smells really fragrant. What’s in it?”
“This has hard nuts in it. It’s called nut bread.”
Mr. Retom placed the iron plate on the central stand, and I peered into the bread. The shape of the bread is round, and it’s the same size as the round bread you get in the morning. But if you look at the surface, you’ll see scattered small, hard nuts.
“Sell me nut bread for 140 Ruta.”
“Okay. Is there a way to arrange them?”
“I’ll leave that to Riru. Just put them on an empty shelf and I’ll go bake the next batch of bread.”
After talking about work, he immediately moved to the back of the store. I’m looking forward to seeing how many more types I’ll bake.
When I got the tongs, I grabbed the nut breads and placed them on the shelf without dropping them. It was like that in the morning so I didn’t have to line them up, but it seems to be different in the afternoon. Ah, I wonder if the customer will pick up the bread, or if I’ll take it for them.
I was curious, so I decided to ask. When I stepped into the back of the store, I saw Retom-san molding bread.
“Excuse me, I have something to ask you.”
“what”
“Should I take the bread for the lunch guests?”
“Ah, that’s right. You’ll be told what bread you want at the counter, and you’ll put that bread on a board and serve it in front of the customer.”
I see, they verbally tell me what bread they want to buy, and I get it for them.
“Oh yeah, adventurers sometimes come to buy bread. They often don’t bring anything to put the bread in, so we also sell bags. Each bag costs 200 Ruta. At the counter. It’s in the back drawer.”
Hey, adventurers are coming too. If he’s a resident, he’ll bring dishes and baskets, so that’s fine, but adventurers don’t have those things. I’m glad that I’m starting to understand more about the store. There are still things I need to remember, so I need to review them thoroughly.
When I returned to the store from the back of the store, I started arranging the bread. It’s almost time until I get to work this afternoon.
